The Organ Trees er en installasjon som består av svartor, glass, lyd og video. Arbeidet er basert på oretreets ulike mytologiske betydninger. Sundland har i denne installasjonen undersøkt ideen om en parallell eksistens, der menneskets livssyklus speiles i trærne. I Finland ble oren identifisert som et menneske, og det ble sagt at det røde harpiksen representerte treets “blod” og at oretreet kunne føle smerte. Mytologiske oppfatninger om hellige trær har vært til stede gjennom historien. Ritualer hvor man planter et tre etter fødsel finnes i flere religioner, med røtter tilbake til gammelbabylonsk tid. Oretreet spiller en viktig rolle i økosystemet, fordi den kan fiksere nitrogen gjennom et symbiotisk forhold til bakterier på røttene. Videomaterialet i verket bygger på kunstnerens undervannsopptak fra en rødlistet svartorsump på Vestlandet.
Glassobjektene er produsert og utviklet med støtte fra S12 Galleri og Verksted.
Kjersti Sundland (f. 1972) arbeider med samarbeidende og utforskende metoder. Hun er opptatt av hvordan vi sanser og opplever verden, og undersøker tilstander som beveger seg i grenselandet mellom virkelighet, fantasi, drøm og våkenhet. Hun er interessert i hvordan slike mentale tilstander kan åpne for nye måter å tenke og reflektere på. Arbeidene hennes tar ofte utgangspunkt i historiske arkiver og annet forskningsmateriale, som hun omformer til fortellinger gjennom lyd, video, skulptur, installasjon og performance. Sundland samarbeider ofte med andre kunstnere, musikere, designere og teknikere. Musikk spiller en viktig rolle i praksisen hennes, der improvisasjon og samspill er sentrale elementer.
Sundland har en bachelorgrad i billedkunst fra Coventry University og en mastergrad i billedkunst fra Royal College of Art i London. Hun har stilt ut arbeidene sine blant annet ved Hordaland Kunstsenter, Rogaland Kunstsenter, Kunsthall 3.14, Museum of Modern Art i Bologna, TICA Centre for Contemporary Art i Tirana, Punkt Ø, UKS i Oslo, Trøndelag senter for samtidskunst, Galleri Brandstrup og Artopia Gallery i Milano. Videoverk og live-video-performancer har blitt vist blant annet på PureScreen (Castlefield), Cork Film Center, B4 Play Video i Berlin, Netmage i Bologna, AudioVisiva i Milano og VideoLisboa i Lisboa.

The Organ Trees is an installation consisting of alder trees, glass, sound, and video. The work is based on the various mythological meanings associated with the alder tree. In this installation, Sundland explores the idea of a parallel existence, where the human life cycle is mirrored in the trees. In Finland, the alder was identified as a human being, and it was said that the red resin represented the tree’s “blood,” and that the alder could feel pain. Mythological notions of sacred trees have existed throughout history. Rituals involving the planting of a tree after birth are found in several religions, with roots dating back to ancient Babylonian times. The alder plays an important role in the ecosystem, as it can fix nitrogen through a symbiotic relationship with bacteria on its roots. The video material in the work is based on the artist’s underwater recordings from a red-listed alder swamp on the west coast of Norway.
The glass objects were produced and developed with support from S12 Gallery and Workshop.
Kjersti Sundland (b. 1972) is a visual artist working with a collaborative and research-based methodology. Her work often explores unusual sensory impressions and mental states that challenge the boundaries of what is defined as reality, fantasy, dream and waking state. Sundland is interested in how different mental states can open up new forms of thinking and reflection. The works are often based on historical archives and other research material, and made into different narratives through sound, video, sculpture, installation and performance. Sundland often works closely with visual artists, musicians, designers, and technicians. Music is central to her practice, where improvisation and interaction are important in realizing the different works.
Sundland holds a BA in Fine Art from Coventry University, and an MA in Fine Art from Royal College of Art, London.
